A new generic version of Viagra will soon be available in the U. S., but the Food and Drug Administration hasn’t decided whether to offer it to the millions of Americans who are taking the drug.
The new drug, available by prescription only, has to be the same as the current Pfizer drug, which has been available only under a generic version since 1998. Generic drugs are the same as brand-name drugs but have the same active ingredients and dosage amounts. They work exactly like the brand-name drugs but have slightly different inactive ingredients.
The new generic version will be sold as the Pfizer-generic drug, which is called Viagra Connect. It will cost about $50 a dose. Generic drugs have a 90-day supply, although a 30-day supply is available for $20.
The drug will cost $65 for a 30-day supply and $70 for a 90-day supply. The generic version is available exclusively through a spokeswoman. She said the drugmaker is “not in discussions with the FDA about the generic version of Viagra.”

Anderson, who has studied Viagra, said that the FDA will consider all options and decide on a generic version of the drug before it’s sold by Pfizer. If Pfizer makes a copy of the FDA’s approval letter, the generic drugmaker will pay $65 for a 30-day supply. The generic drugmaker will also pay $70 for a 90-day supply.
